Every business has that one person who puts a smile on their face each day as soon as they walk in the door. The kind voice that says “Good Morning” even before you are ready to conquer the day. The person who brightens your day by just being there. At Hippo Business Services, this person is Mata Rorani – Our residential Human Resources Manager, and head of the party committee.
Mata joined the team in 2019 in Client Management, and through her impeccable skillset and knowledge has evolved into the HR Manager, who oversees all internal and external recruitment.
“My role is somewhat more than HR, as well as onboarding in-house staff and I also recruit VAs from the Philippines for our new clients,” says Mata.
“On top of this, I oversee our internal payroll, as well as invoicing and accounts receivable for our clients.”
Working in a client facing role, Mata has learned how to correctly identify and maintain a strong relationship with clients, VAs and our internal team.
“The ability to maintain a strong positive relationship is important to Hippo as a business because it is what we are all about,” says Mata.
“We are about finding people who need the extra help, so they can focus on their other ventures.
“We help create and maintain a relationship with their new extended team, and monitor the progress to ensure that all parties are happy.”
When hiring a new employee, it is important to ensure that the person doesn’t just have the right skillset, however also is the right cultural fit for a team. Whether hiring in-house or virtually, there is more to an employee than their skills.
“We also need to find the right VA to fit in with their business and their culture, as this is just as important as finding the application with the required skills and experience,” says Mata.
“Now this could be something like we have had in the past clients who have a young team of people, so putting somebody mature-aged on might not be the right fit for them.
“They might have all the experience and skill that they need, but they aren’t culturally fit for them.
“We find the right VA to fit the right client.”
Working in a startup brings an array of unidentified roles, that allow for one to grow a diverse skill set and the ability to thrive in multiple areas.
“Working with a new and growing company, I am commonly the go to person for any personal issues that may arise, and help solve before the friction can lead to a bigger problem,” says Mata.
“Fortunately, working with a collaborative and dynamic team, this rarely happens.”
Collaboration and communication within any team are the keys to success in the long term.
“Everyone here gets along with one another and helps each other even if it’s got nothing to do with what you do,” says Mata.
“You could always ask for advice or know that if they can’t help you, they will guide you in finding the person who can.”
“Teamwork is what we’re all about here at the bay.”
If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting our wonderful Mata, you will be immediately blown away by her kind and warm personality that is created through the many years of life experience as a mother and grandmother.
“I think as a mother and grandmother, the team respects my natural maternal instincts, and listens to my guidance in this area,” says Mata.
“A positive team environment is important in any industry, because if there isn’t, there would be a lot of negative vibes that will affect the way you work,” says Mata.
Mata left us with some parting words, and expressing her gratitude for her mentor, and fellow Hippo superstar, Josie Holt.
“We’re all here for the same purpose to promote Hippo as an amazing outsourcing business,” says Mata.
“If we can do one thing to help Hippo be greater than that’s definitely a plus.”
“I came into this role not knowing anything. I had an amazing teacher, Josie and I love connecting VAs with the clients.”
